Staying active – Making exercise accessible and fun for people living with dementia

Regular exercise is good for you. We all know that but, for people living with dementia, illness, reduced mobility, or just simple lack of motivation can easily lead to them becoming much less active. If they are spending long hours everyday chair-bound, they may need some help and encouragement to increase their activity levels. It won’t just improve their physical health, but their mental health too.

Nobody is suggesting a marathon! A little gentle exercise on a daily basis is the order of the day by helping them find an activity that will be both manageable and enjoyable.

The benefits of moving more

Exercise makes you feel better – By getting the blood pumping, physical activity makes you less lethargic and more alert. It’s good for your heart, can help reduce high blood pressure, and helps you sleep better at night.

Exercise helps improve mobility and therefore your level of independence – By keeping the bones strong and preventing muscles deteriorating a programme of regular exercise will play an essential role in reducing the risk of falls by improving core strength and balance.

Exercise can ease anxiety, agitation and boredom – By providing a great opportunity to mix and socialise, exercise can help improve confidence and self-esteem. For people living with dementia it can also play an important part in reducing restlessness and wandering.

Help to get active

Fear of falling, anxiety and loss of motivation are all common factors that impact people’s mobility, so its important to bring the enjoyment back into exercising to help everyone have fun.

Careful choice of activity, provision of appropriate balance and mobility aids, and ensuring the right level of support and encouragement can make all make a real difference in helping people retain their strength and boost confidence in their own abilities.
